Am I The Right Candidate for Septoplasty?
If you have difficulty breathing or have one nostril that is larger than the other, you may have an issue with your septum. The septum is the part of the nose that separates the nostrils and is made of bone and cartilage. At Texas Sinus & Snoring, Dr. Cilento can provide you with the best care to achieve a straightened septum. This procedure is known as septoplasty. Read on to find out if you are the right candidate.
The right candidate for septoplasty
If you have a deviated septum or bone displacement in the nasal area, a septoplasty may be right for you. During a septoplasty, the septum is realigned and straightened. To accomplish this, portions of the septum are cut, moved, or removed to create the desired result. After your surgery, airflow will improve. Keep in mind that this is not a cosmetic procedure. You could be a candidate for septoplasty if: the septum has been damaged during pregnancy when the baby is moving through the birth canal. Trauma to the nose, for example due to a contact sport or car accident, may create the need for septoplasty.
Prior to your surgery, Dr. Cilento will evaluate your condition to determine if this procedure is the best fit for you. A scope is used to check the deep nose tissue to ascertain airflow. If you have a subtle septum deviation, you may not need septoplasty. Sometimes, a deviated septum can create breathing problems as well as dryness or nose bleeding.
After your procedure
After your septpolasty procedure, you will need to take special care not to let your nose come into contact with anything—even clothing! Wear zip up or button up jackets or shirts to avoid pulling a clothing over your head. High intensity activities like running should be avoided because they increase blood pressure in your face.
