Your recovery, your timeline—here’s what’s normal after facial rejuvenation surgery.

Considering a facelift? Or already counting down the days after your procedure? One of the most common questions we hear at Cilento Facial Plastics is: “What should I expect one week after surgery?”

The first week is a critical part of the healing process. It’s a time when the body is doing a lot of internal work—reducing swelling, forming new tissue, and settling into the new contours Dr. Cilento has carefully sculpted. While everyone’s recovery is slightly different, here’s a general guide for what most patients experience around Day 7.

Swelling & Bruising: Still Visible, But Improving

By the one-week mark, you’ll likely still see some swelling and bruising—especially around the cheeks, jawline, and neck. For most patients, swelling begins to shift downward slightly and may look more puffy in the lower face than earlier in the week.

What’s normal:

  • Puffy or tight sensation

  • Visible but fading bruises

  • Mild asymmetry as healing continues

What’s not normal:

  • Sudden increase in swelling

  • Redness, warmth, or discharge (which may signal infection)

Sutures & Staples: Often Removed This Week

Depending on the technique used, Dr. Cilento may have used internal sutures, dissolvable stitches, or external sutures or staples. Around Day 5–7, many external sutures are ready to be removed in-office. This is a quick, painless visit and often a major milestone in your recovery.

Discomfort: Diminishing Daily

By this point, most patients are no longer taking prescription pain medication and are managing mild discomfort with over-the-counter options. You might feel tightness or a pulling sensation—this is a normal part of the healing as tissues adjust.

Appearance: You Might Feel “Puffy,” Not “Pretty” Yet

It’s very common to feel impatient at this stage. You’ve been through surgery, but your face might still feel swollen or unfamiliar. This is temporary.

At one week, you are still early in the healing journey. Trust the process—you’ll begin seeing more refined results in the weeks to come.

Activity & Aftercare: What You Can (and Can’t) Do

Most patients are still taking it easy one week post-op. You should still avoid:

  • Strenuous activity or workouts

  • Bending over or heavy lifting

  • Excessive sun exposure

  • Smoking or alcohol

You can usually begin:

  • Gentle walks

  • Light daily activities

  • Returning to desk work (if approved)

Make sure you’re following Dr. Cilento’s specific aftercare instructions, including skincare, incision care, and any compression garments if prescribed.
